Welcome to the Paarl Wellington Hebrew Congregation website - a homage to the past, present and future of the Hebrew community of Paarl and Wellington in South Africa. Here, you can meet our members and their families, learn more about our history, pay your respects to family members that have passed away or tune in to the Rabbi's weekly talks.
Situated in the beautiful Boland region of the Western Cape and separated by a mere 15km, are two small towns viz Paarl and Wellington. We have approximately 60 residents, comprising business people, farmers, professionals, students, scholars and retirees. The community is diverse and many of our descendants are from Eastern Europe.
Paarl Hebrew Congregation was established in 1893 and as a country community has remained a viable one. Wellington Hebrew Congregation was founded in 1902. In 1981, the 9 remaining families amalgamated with Paarl and jointly became known as the Paarl Wellington Hebrew Congregation.
Our Synagogue is located in Breda Street, Paarl. Adjacent to the Shul (Synagogue) is the "Rabbi's" house as well as our Talmud Torah Hall, which is used occasionally for communal affairs. Our Sabbath Services are ably conducted alternatively by Dovid Jubiler and David Cohen, both who travel from Cape Town (distance 60km) to be with us. The members of our Congregation are spread far and wide and we are delighted when they attend our services. On High and Holy Days, we warmly welcome our many visitors.
We look forward to your participation and we hope you find the website informative and interesting. Please feel free to contact us should you require any further information.
